North Carolina Property Tax Relief

The North Carolina Property Tax Relief will be available again in January 2011. The Application deadline for this year was June 1.

These programs allow eligible homeowners to exclude a certain amount from the value of their permanent residence for purposes of appraisal for property taxes. Individuals can only claim one of the exclusions even if they are eligible for both. The same application form is used to apply for either of these exclusions.

Elderly or Disabled Exclusion
This program excludes the greater of the first $25,000 or 50% of the appraised value of the permanent residence of a qualifying owner. A qualifying owner must EITHER be at least 65 years of age OR totally and permanently disabled at any age. Furthermore, the owner cannot have income that exceeds $27,100

Disabled Veteran Exclusion
This program excludes up to the first $45,000 of the appraised value of the permanent residence of an honorably discharged veteran who has a total and permanent disability that is service-connected OR receives benefits for specially adapted housing. There is no age or income limitation for this program.
